February 2017 Workshop

When: Thursday 2 February, 2017.
Where: Department of Mathematics, Fraser Noble Building FN185.
Time: 13:30 – 17:15.

Organisers: Jim Howie (Heriot-Watt), Ben Martin (Aberdeen), Colva Roney-Dougal (St Andrews).

Supported by the Glasgow Mathematical Journal Trust.

How to get to the campus (this information was compiled by Aaron Tikuisis for a Scottish Operator Algebras Research cluster meeting).

There are no formal lunch arrangements, but a group of us will probably go to the main university cafeteria at around noon.

 Time Speaker Title
13:30-14:30  Richard Hepworth (Aberdeen)  Homological stability.
14:45-15:45  Collin Bleak (St Andrews)  On finite generation for groups of homeomorphisms of Cantor spaces.  Click here for slides.
 15:45-16:15  Tea/coffee
16:15-17:15  Vaibhav Gadre (Glasgow)  Word length statistics and Lyapunov exponents for Fuchsian groups with cusps.

There will be a dinner at 18:00 at a restaurant near the train station.

Funding: We expect to be able to pay reasonable travel costs for all participants (depending on numbers).  If more people come than expected, priority will be given to postgraduate students and those without other sources of funding.

Registration: There is no formal registration.  If you plan to attend, we’d be grateful if you would email Ben Martin B.Martin@abdn.ac.uk by the end of Tuesday 31 January, to give us an idea of numbers.  Please give a rough estimate of your travel costs if you would like to be reimbursed, and let us know whether you want to go to the dinner (and what your dietary restrictions are, if any).

This is the first in a series of workshops: for the main page, click here.
